The 2011 Goulée of Château Cos d'Estournel is a Médoc, a fruity wine, round, easy to drink. We will find a nice acidity, notes of red fruits and cassis and nice woody notes at the end of the mouth.
Located in the northern Médoc, the Goulée vineyard is owned by the Reybier estates, also at the head of the Château Cos d'Estournel in Saint Estèphe. Often mistakenly considered as the 2nd wine of Château Cos D'Estournel, Goulée is a property apart, but it bears the signature.
Tasting Notes :
A brilliant innovation by the proprietor Cos d'Estournel, Michel Reybier, this offering has been a delicious, fruit-forward, interesting Medoc in every vintage to date. The 2011 Goulee has triumphed over the vintage difficulties, resulting in a dark ruby-colored wine with lots of black cherry, black currant, licorice, spice and damp earth notes. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
It is an easy-going, dark plum/ruby/purple-tinged wine displaying sweet tannin as well as plenty of black and blue fruits that hit the palate with some authority, but tend to fade more quickly than other top St.-Emilions. Charming, pure and silky, it is best consumed in its first decade of life.
This estate, which was part of the huge Figeac vineyard until it broke away in 1879, has produced a soft, round 2011 from modest yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. Made by Stephane Derenoncourt's wife, Christine, it is a blend of 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc.
Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, April 2012
A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the Goulée 2011 has a modest, tertiary bouquet with dried herbs and sous-bois more pronounced that in the 2010 or 2009. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins with a tapered, but crisp leafy finish. Fine. Tasted April 2012.
