Purple Angel has a distinctive intense purple colour with delicate hints of chocolate and cigar box aromas. The wine is a blend of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot from the Colchagua Valley. The Carmenère grapes are sourced in equal parts from our Apalta and Marchigue vineyards. The Carmenère from Apalta adds sophistication and subtlety to the blend, providing chocolate, vanilla and tobacco aromas, due to the combination of dark fruit flavours and the spiciness typical of the variety while the grapes from our Marchigue estate, provide potency and colour to the wine creating a fine balance of power and elegance. The blend is finally enhanced with Petit Verdot to provide structure and at the same time wild flavours of black berries. On the mouth, it is full bodied, with a generous amount of ripe tannins giving grip and depth to this lovely wine.
Winemaking: Grapes are carefully hand picked. Clusters go through a grape by grape selection made by hand with a team of 14 people, in which only good fruit is allowed into the tank. During the 18 months of barrel aging, the wine is racked 3 times to get rid of lees, and allow some oxygen to interfere in the evolution and maturation of this wine.
98 points James Suckling: "Blackberry, blueberry, sage and five spice on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins. Balanced and creamy with a fresh, juicy character palate. Silky texture with great structure. Savory finish with length. Peppery and spicy aftertaste. A blend of 92% carmenere and 8% petit verdot. Try in 2023. (6/03/21)"
97 points Tim Atkin, MW: "The lighter touch that has been apparent on this wine since 2016 has turned it from a red I admired into one that I actively want to drink. Made from Carmenère with 8% Petit Verdot, using fruit from Apalta and Marchigüe, this is a fine, detailed, focused Purple Angel with subtle 80% new wood, engaging freshness, lots of leafy perfume and thrilling palate length. 2023-32."
